MikroTik - Setup and Configure L2TP IPSec VPN Server on MikroTik and Windows XP Client

Today we will learn how to configure VPN Server L2TP IPSec on MikroTik router and setup VPN client on Microsoft Windows XP for testing the VPN server.<br /> <br /> MikroTik RouterOS is powerful Linux based OS and have lots of features<br /> from firewall to Load balance and hotspot to VPN server. One of these is builtin radius server <i>userman</i> which serve as central user database and billing AAA server (Prepaid and postpaid) for all the service which support Radius client (NAS) even for remote NAS clients.<br /> <br /> I assume that you are familiar with MikroTik with basic configuration and menus. So lets get to work.<br /> <br /> MikroTik Part<br /> <ol> <li>Login to your MikroTik via winbox</li> <li>Goto <i>IP -> IP Pool</i> and click + (plus)</li> <li>On the new dialog of IP Pool Enter (in my case)</li> <ol> <li>Name : <i>L2TP-IP-pool1</i></li> <li>Addresses : <i>172.16.20.2-172.16.8.254</i></li> <li><i>OK</i></li> </ol> <li>Goto <i>IP -> Firewall -> NAT </i>and click on + (plus) Enter following (in my case)</li> <ol> <li>On General Tab </li> <ol> <li>Chain : <i>srcnat</i></li> <li>Src Address : <i>172.16.20.0/24</i></li> </ol> <li>On Action tab</li> <ol> <li>Action : <i>masquerade </i></li> </ol> <li>Click<i> OK</i></li> </ol> <li>Goto <i>IP -> IPSec -> peers </i>and click + (plus) and enter following (in my case)</li> <ol> <li>Secret : <i>1234</i></li> <li>Exchange Mode : <i>main l2tp</i></li> <li>Check <i>Send initial contact</i></li> <li>My ID : <i>auto</i></li> <li>Proposal Check : <i>obey</i></li> <li>Hash Algorithm : <i>sha1</i></li> <li>Encryption Algorithm : <i>3des, aes128</i></li> <li>D/H Group : <i>modp 1024</i></li> <li>Generate Policy : <i>port override</i></li> <li>Click <i>OK</i></li> </ol> <li>Now Click on <i>Proposal </i>tab on <i>IPSec</i> windows and open the <i>default</i></li> <li>Check <i>sha1, 3des, aes128 cbc, aes256 cbc </i>and PFS Group : <i>none </i>and Click<i> OK</i></li> <li>Now goto <i>PPP </i>and Click <i>L2TP server</i> button and Check <i>enable, Use IPSec </i>and enter IPSec Secret : <i>1234 </i>and Click <i>OK</i></li> <li>Now Goto <i>Profiles </i>tab<b style="font-style: italic;"> </b>on <i>PPP </i>and click + (plus) and enter following (in my case)</li> <ol> <li>Name : <i>L2TP-IPSec-profile1</i></li> <li>Local Address : <i>172.16.20.1</i></li> <li>Remote Address : <i>L2TP-IP-Pool1</i></li> <li>Click on <i>Proposal </i>tab and Check <i>Required</i></li> <li>Click <i>OK</i></li> </ol> <li>Now Goto <i>Secret </i>tab and Click + (plus) and enter following on <i>New PPP Secret</i></li> <ol> <li>Name : <i>l2tp</i></li> <li>Password : <i>l2</i><i>tp</i></li> <li>Service : <i>l2tp</i></li> <li>Profile : <i>L2TP-IPSec-profile1</i></li> <li>Click <i>OK</i></li> </ol> <li>That's all for MikroTik</li> </ol> <div> Now comes the <i>Microsoft Windows XP</i> Part</div> <div> <ol> <li>Login to your Windows XP Machine (in my case) </li> <li>Goto <i>My Network Properties</i></li> <li>Click <i>Create New Connection </i>to open New connection Wizard</li> <li>Click <i>Next</i></li> <li>Select <i>Connect to the network at my workplace </i>and click <i>Next</i></li> <li>Select <i>Virtual Private Network Connection </i>and click <i>Next</i></li> <li>Company Name enter anything <i>L2TP VPN Connection </i>in my case and Click <i>Next</i></li> <li>Enter the Host Name or IP address <i>10.0.0.1 (</i>in my case Gateway) and Click <i>Next</i></li> <li>Click <i>Finish</i></li> <li>Now open the created Connection and enter the Username/ Password <i>l2tp/l2tp </i>(in my case)</li> <li>Click Properties - > <i>Security </i>tab and Click <i>IPSec settings...</i></li> <li>and Enter the Key <i>1234 </i>and Click <i>OK</i></li> <li>Click on <i>Networking</i> Tab and Select Type of VPN as <i>L2TP IPSec VPN </i>and Click <i>OK</i></li> <li>Now Click <i>Connect</i></li> <li>You shall connect to the<i> L2TP VPN Server</i></li> <li>You can use userman Radius Server for<i> userman and Password</i></li> <li>All done, </li> </ol> </div> Thanks for reading and watching.<br /> Visit my YouTube Channel <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkg5BQEcyR414Z2MJ4qsdPw">HomeTech</a><br /> <br /> Please Support my YouTube Channel by liking and subscribing<br /> I spend more time on my YouTube Channel so all comments are 101%  replied there<br /> Comments and suggestions are welcome to improve the tutorial and help other<br /> <br /> Share Happiness<br /> <div> <br /></div> See the video for more details<br /> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/eYdJr0fJpco" width="480"></iframe>
